The one with Mickey & Minnie...

What a busy start of the year it's been already!

I feel like I've crammed a lot in so far, and this week shows no sign of slowing down!
It was also one of my best friend's birthday celebration at the beginning of January, and in true grown up style she opted for a Disney themed birthday, fancy dress required!
Oh, what character to be?! Decisions, decisions!

Now, I have always known what character I would want to be if I ever had to do a Disney fancy dress. It would have to be Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty. I have always loved that character from the original film, she's such a good villain! But I also thought Angelina Jolie did a fantastic job in the 2014 film Maleficent. But, if I were to ever be Maleficent I'd want to take my time on the costume, making the horns, a long cape and maybe even getting some prosthetic makeup for doing those amazing cheek bones! But I felt that would be a bit too elaborate for a night out in our town centre, so I put the Maleficent idea to one side and The Ginge & I went for the Disney classic, the ultimate power couple; Mickey & Minnie Mouse.

I already had my red & white polka dot dress, it was originally from George at Asda but has had a few alterations to it over the years! My white leather gloves were a great buy from a vintage fair. I teamed them with black tights and my lace up biker boots. The Ginge wore his own dark coloured jeans, black top & red boardshorts. I bought the mouse head bands from Amazon, they shipped really quickly which was great and are so cute! (Click here to buy)

The night itself was great fun. We went to the birthday girls house for drinks & birthday cakes before heading into the town centre for cocktails and dancing. People made a great effort with their costumes, we had everyone from Mrs Incredible to Cinderella, Beast from Beauty & The Beast, Alice in Wonderland, Stitch and more! The birthday girl dedicated herself to the theme and painted herself purple to come as Ursula from The Little Mermaid!

With the birthday girl! xxx

All in all a fun night out that turned quite a few heads and my second fancy dress of 2016!

Happy New Year - Terminator Style!

So, apparently yesterday was 'the most depressing day of the year', also known as 'Blue Monday'. Not sure how much I actually read into that, but in the spirit of trying to cheer up this cold, grey January I thought it was time to write up a post on my New Years Eve outfit. Perhaps a little bit late, but I had so much fun it that night it really makes me smile thinking about it!

So every year, the Ginge hosts a new years eve party at his house, normally with a fancy dress theme. The themes have definitely varied, and people put in as much or as little effort into their costumes as they want. Some people don't dress up, but it's all part of the fun and I'm always game for a good fancy dress opportunity!

Some of my past outfits have included

(Movie Theme - I'm the one on the right)

A Flamingo
(Animal Theme)

Jill Masterson from 'Goldfinger'
(James Bond Theme)

Gamora from 'Guardians of the Galaxy'
(ComicCon Theme)

This wasn't actually a new years party but a party just the same! And yeah the green paint took more than one shower to get off properly! The costumes never end up looking anything like that by the end of the night, too many drinks spilt and too much dancing, but it's fun while it lasts!

The theme for this year's party was 'Sci Fi'. "Great choice!" we thought, until we'd left it pretty late to design or make anything extravagant! Oops! So the Ginge and I racked our brains and came up with.... Terminators! Yep, The Terminator from that classic 80s movie where Arnold Schwarzenegger is the robot killing machine sent back in time to kill Jon Connor... and a female version! Pretty easy to do clothes wise, just dark trousers & top/leather jacket/sunglasses/toy gun. Unfortunately some of my costume wasn't delivered on time so I couldn't be 'T-X' from Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines but just a generic female Terminator instead!

The only hard thing was going to be the makeup, which was left to me!  I did a bit of research online, and decided that a half face of makeup would be better than a full one. This was one of the images I liked the best.

There are more cool images I found on Pinterest (check out my board here). I also found this great tutorial on YouTube by Ashlea Henson which I followed to create our makeup.

As party host, the Ginge was up first.

Then me...

I started by putting my normal base of makeup on (foundation/concealer etc) then did my eye makeup on one side of my face that wasn't going to have the face paint on. I followed the techniques from the video above for the other side of my face.

Our finished makeup

And in full costume...

My apologies now, you'll have to make do with these fuzzy mirror selfies of my costume as by the time I'd finished getting ready people had already arrived at the party! Must plan in time for photos next time!

I think I did a pretty good job a the face painting, I'd love to get some latex or wax next for moulding ripped skin next time. The party was great fun and the face paint lasted longer than expected - my eye  bag was significantly darker on one side than the other in the morning!

Hope you all had a great new years too!
Any costumes or face painting you wanna share, let me know :)

The Evolution of Captain America's Uniform

I found this post via my Facebook account and thought I'd share it with you. It's from the Facebook page of which is a great site for movie and tv news. (Check out their Facebook profile here). It's just a short slide show showing the evolution of Captain America's uniform.

The evolution of Captain America's uniform! Which one is your favorite?

It's really interesting to see the change in costume from film to film. Something you wouldn't really notice when watching the films that Captain America features in. My favourites have to be costumes three & six in that slide show. Especially how costume six has moved into a darker, moodier shade of blue.

This also got me thinking about the next film where we'll get to see Cap' at it again, Captain America: Civil War. I'm actually really excited to see this film as not only am I a fan of the Captain America & Avengers films, (fun, silly, action packed movies!) but I have actually read the Civil War comic!

Now I hold my hands up, I am not a comic book reader. I have nothing against comics or graphic novels, I just haven't been around them much, I've always dived straight in to a mystery novel even from a young age! However, The Ginge is a comic book lover, so after the last Avengers film he lent me Civil War to read, knowing the film would be out in 2016. And I'm pleased to say I really enjoyed it! The story was quite fast paced, and I have to say some of the artwork is pretty impressive.

Check out the trailer for it too!

I can't say I'll be giving up my murder mystery novels for comics anytime soon, but after watching that trailer how can you not be excited for Captain America: Civil War?!

My Goals for 2016

Hello Everyone!

Happy New Year!

I can't quite believe it's January 2016.

Christmas is over, we're all out of money and back at work, the gyms are bursting at the seams even though there's leftover chocolate bursting out of everyone's cupboards! Despite how miserable this sounds I'm actually feeling pretty positive and motivated at the start of the year. As with everyone, I'm seeing this as a fresh start. So in the spirit of the New Year I thought I'd write a post on my goals for 2016. I haven't made any new years resolutions as such, I feel that for me making a set new years resolution is quite restrictive, I usually end up forgetting what my resolution was by March and when I remember it again feel bad that I've got side-tracked so early in the year! So instead I have come up with some goals I would like to work on during the year.

I really enjoyed the projects I undertook during 2015 and documenting them on this blog. Some of my favourites include Tops Project, One Shoulder Dress and Chair Covers Project. I also managed to finally open my Etsy shop DesignsbyEY, (Read about it here) I'm really proud of this and looking forward to adding more items to the store.

I'm going to continue my blogging journey and carry on documenting my creative ventures in sewing, art & design. I feel like it's a great outlet for showcasing your work and connecting with other creative types.

I also have a few projects that I've mapped out in Wardrobe Architect: Week 11.
* Gold Shimmer Chiffon - Cami Top & Sleeveless Shirt
* Teal Chiffon - Shirt
* Crystal Print Chiffon - Shirt or Cami Top
* Grey/Neon Col.Pop Knit - Draped Cardi
* Silver/Grey Check - Crop Jacket/Bolero
* Blue Check Wool - Skater Skirt or Dress
* Black Quilted Fabric - Loose Fit Tee or Vest Top

My fitness and workout routine took a bit of a nose dive at the end of last year. Not just due to the Christmas season, where I ate & drank what I liked without guilt! But also due to the fact I was so ill during November, it really has taken me until now to feel back to normal health even though I went back to work way before Christmas. I'm aiming to start slowly & build my fitness back up to the level it was before and hopefully exceed it. Getting my fitness up is really important to me as my main goal this year is to be good enough in both fitness & technique to grade for my next belt in Taekwondo. The grading isn't until October, but this next grade would mean the most to me out of all the belts I've earned as I've pretty much had to re-train from scratch since leaving university. I'm both excited and scared at the prospect, but I think that's probably a good state of mind to be in in terms of motivation!

Sewing Machine Restoration

As I've mentioned before on this blog, the Ginge made me a very happy lady by rescuing a vintage sewing machine for me from the skip yard! (Read about it here). So, one of my goals for this year is to start restoring my lovely lady to her former sewing machine glory! I feel like it's going to be slow and steady progress for this goal but it'll be worth it!

What are your goals for the year?
